What Is an ESIC Insurance Number? How to Check Your ESIC Number Online

What Is an ESIC Insurance Number How to Check Your ESIC Number Online

Your salary slip shows an ESIC deduction every month. But if someone asked you for your ESIC insurance number right now, would you know where to find it? Most people wouldn’t. They go about their work without giving it much thought until a hospital asks for it or they need to make a claim. That’s when the confusion starts.

So, how to Find Your ESIC Insurance Number?

  • What it is: a unique 10-digit ID that identifies you as an insured person (IP). It stays with you when you switch jobs.
  • Where to look first: your e-Pehchan card or an old salary slip.
  • If you can’t find it: ask your current or previous HR, or use the official ESIC portal or the UMANG app. Don’t create a duplicate registration.

In this blog, we’ll show you how to verify your ESIC number online, where else to look, and what to do if your number is missing or hasn’t been generated yet.

What Is an ESIC Insurance Number?

The Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) runs a social security scheme for workers under the ESIC Act 1948. It sits under the Ministry of Labour and Employment.

Your insurance number is also called the ESIC IP number. IP means Insured Person. It stays with you for life. When you change jobs, you keep the same number, and your new employer should link to it. Your contributions, family details, and claims all hang off this one ID.

The “ESIC 17-digit number” mix-up

Many websites say your ESIC number has 17 digits. For employees, that’s wrong. The ESIC 17-digit number is the ESIC employer code. It belongs to your company, not to you.

How to Check Your ESIC Insurance Number Online?

Start here. It takes two minutes.

  • Salary slip: Many companies print your 10-digit ESIC number under deductions or earnings. Not every employer does.
  • e-Pehchan card: Your number sits next to your name on the physical or digital card.
  • HR or Accounts: They hold your registration record. Ask them if the first two don’t work.

Check online on the ESIC portal:

  • Ask your current or previous employer’s HR department to look up your number.
  • The HR team can log into the Employer Dashboard and use the “Search IP” tool to instantly retrieve your lost 10-digit ID using your mobile number or Universal Account Number (UAN).

Note: You cannot log into the public Employee Login screen to find a missing number, as that portal requires you to already know and type your 10-digit number to log in or reset a password. Once you get the number from HR, you can then log in to view your profile and download your card.

Check online on the UMANG app:

  • Open the UMANG app and search for ESIC.
  • Log in with your mobile number and OTP.
  • Go to the ESIC services section. To link your profile and download your digital e-Pehchan card, you will need to enter your 10-digit ESIC number. If you do not have this number, the app cannot automatically fetch your insurance records using just your phone number.

Your OTP goes to the mobile number registered with ESIC. If you changed numbers, ask HR to update it first. Menu names change, so follow what the official screen shows. Never share your OTP with anyone, and don’t enter your details on “number finder” sites.

If none of this works, visit an ESIC branch. Carry your ID and an offer letter or salary slip.

ESIC Insurance Number Search by Aadhaar, Mobile, Name or Employer Code

Lots of people search these four ways. Here is the honest picture.

Check by Aadhaar

No public tool shows an insurance number from an Aadhaar entry. If your Aadhaar is linked to your ESIC record, it can help verify you through an OTP.

Check by name

A name alone isn’t enough, since many people share one. HR or an ESIC branch can match it with your date of birth.

Check by mobile number

Your registered mobile number receives the login OTP. If you changed numbers, ask HR to update it first.

Check by employer code

Ask HR for the 17-digit code. It helps an ESIC office find your record, but it won’t reveal your number alone.

Expert insight from Balakrishna K Shibaraya, Prashasthi Corporate Advisors: “Treat your first payslip as a checkpoint. If an ESI deduction shows up but no insurance number appears anywhere, ask HR that in the same week. Waiting until you’re sick makes it harder to fix.”

How to Find Your ESIC Insurance Number on the e-Pehchan Card?

People mix up the two numbers because both sit on the same printout. This is how ESIC’s registration printout is laid out. Digits are placeholders.

Insured Person: [Your name]

Insurance No.: XXXXXXXXXX  ← 10 digits. This is YOURS.

Employer’s Code No.: XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX  ← 17 digits. This is your company’s.

Dispensary: [Your assigned dispensary]

UAN field: [Seeding prompt]

The 10-digit Insurance No. is yours, and ESIC services ask for it as your IP number. The 17-digit Employer’s Code No. belongs to your company.

To download the card, log in to the portal or UMANG and open the e-Pehchan option. Check your name, family details, and dispensary before saving the PDF. If something’s wrong, ask your employer to correct it. Keep the file private. It holds personal data.

Why Is Your ESIC Insurance Number Important

Why Is Your ESIC Insurance Number Important?

Your number opens most ESIC services, and it comes with benefits. But each benefit has its own conditions.

  • Medical care: for you and your family at ESIC hospitals and dispensaries.
  • Sickness and maternity benefits: these are cash benefits. They require a minimum number of contribution days, which ESIC lists on its benefits pages.
  • Employment injury benefit: for work-related injury or death. Its conditions differ from sickness and maternity.
  • Disablement benefit: cash support, typically up to 90% of wages, if a work injury or occupational disease disables you.
  • Dependants’ benefit: a pension for dependants if a worker dies from a work injury.

Percentages and durations depend on the benefit you claim, so read the exact rule on ESIC portal before you apply.

If you don’t have the number handy, you aren’t stuck. Your HR, the portal, UMANG or an ESIC branch can often trace your record using other details.

Who Is Eligible for ESIC? Wage Limit and Eligibility Criteria

Two things decide this.

Your employer must be covered. ESIC’s registration guide lists the minimum headcount by state. Karnataka has 10 employees. Some states are at 20.

Your wages must be within the ESIC wage limit. ESIC’s FAQ confirms ₹21,000 a month. However, employees with disabilities have a higher wage ceiling of ₹25,000 a month (under a scheme effective from 1 April 2016). News reports say the Labour Ministry discussed raising the general limit to ₹30,000 on 4 August 2026, but nothing has been notified yet. Employer coverage matters as much as your pay, so check both. Employers should also understand their payroll compliance requirements in Bangalore.

Under ESIC’s contribution page, you pay 0.75% of wages, and your employer pays 3.25% (effective 1 July 2019). Employees with an average daily wage up to ₹176 (effective 1 September 2019) don’t pay the employee share, but the employer still pays its own. Say your pay crosses ₹21,000 midway through a contribution period. You usually stay covered until that period ends. The periods run April to September and October to March.

Old mobile number

Go to the branch

Two numbers exist

Use the older number; ask HR to freeze the new one

Take both numbers to the branch to merge them

For a branch visit, carry your ID and an offer letter or salary slip. ESIC also has a toll-free helpline (1800-11-2526). Confirm the current number on esic.gov.in first.

ESIC Insurance Number Not Generated? Here’s What to Do

An employer should register you soon after you join. ESIC’s Form 1 expects it within 10 days of appointment. The online system may accept late entries, but your employer may have to explain the delay.

Ask HR in writing for your registration date and IP number. Check that your wages are within the limit and your employer is covered. If HR stalls, take your appointment letter and payslips to your local ESIC branch. ESIC also has an Insured Person Registration page, so check what it allows in your case.

One more thing. ESIC ran a registration drive called SPREE 2025 from 1 July 2025. The Labour Ministry extended it to 31 January 2026. It has now closed. Check ESIC’s circular on esic.gov.in for what applies to your employer today. Either way, ask for your number early.

The Prashasthi Corporate Advisors 3-Minute Contribution Check

Having a number isn’t enough. Check that your employer is paying into it. Do this every few months:

  1. Log in and open your contribution history.
  2. Compare each month with your payslip’s ESI deduction.
  3. Look for gaps, like a month with a deduction but no contribution.
  4. Raise gaps with HR in writing, with payslip copies.

A payslip deduction doesn’t, by itself, confirm the contribution was recorded against your ESIC account. Learn more about payment of ESIC and how to verify your contributions.

Compare your payslips with the contribution history on the official portal. If a month is missing or the figures don’t match, ask HR for clarification. If the gap remains, contact ESIC.

Does Your ESIC Number Change When You Change Jobs?

It shouldn’t. On day one, tell your new HR: “I already have an ESIC IP number. Please link it instead of making a new one.” Give them your 10-digit number. After registration, ask them to confirm the same number shows on your record.

Expert insight from Balakrishna K Shibaraya, Prashasthi Corporate Advisors: “Never let anyone generate a second number to fix a login problem. Fix the old record. Two numbers mean split contributions and a messier claim.”

What is the Difference Between ESIC vs UAN and ESIC vs PF?

These are separate schemes with separate numbers.

  • ESIC vs UAN: Your ESIC Insurance Number is a unique 10-digit ID issued by the ESIC. Your Universal Account Number (UAN) is a 12-digit ID issued by the EPFO for managing your provident fund. One cannot replace the other, though your ESIC portal profile will prompt you to seed your UAN to link your social security records together.
  • ESIC vs PF: ESIC covers medical and cash benefits. PF builds retirement savings and pension. Their wage limits differ too. The Labour Ministry announced a higher PF ceiling of ₹25,000, effective 17 September 2026. The ESIC limit stayed at ₹21,000. So someone earning ₹23,000 may now come under PF but stay outside ESIC.

Understand employer PF contributions and how to calculate your EPS pension.

Where Does the Internet Get ESIC Wrong?

Search ESIC topics, and you’ll see conflicting claims. Here is how to sort them.

  • “Workers under ₹137 a day pay no employee share.” ESIC’s older FAQ lists ₹137. ESIC’s current contribution page says ₹176, effective 1 September 2019.
  • “Aadhaar finds your number instantly.” Only if your record is linked and the service verifies you.

Stay Safe: Type esic.gov.in yourself. Never share an OTP with an agent. Don’t upload your Aadhaar to a “number finder” site. No genuine ESIC service asks you to pay to see your own number.

ESIC Registration in Bangalore (For Employers)

If you run a business, ESIC registration in Bangalore follows the central online process. Karnataka’s threshold is 10 employees. Sign up on the employer section at esic.gov.in, fill Form 1, and choose your ESIC branch. After you pay the advance contribution, you get a C-11 letter with your 17-digit employer code. Then register each eligible employee so each gets a 10-digit number. For the full steps, see our employer guide to ESIC registration.

Expert insight from Balakrishna K Shibaraya, Prashasthi Corporate Advisors: “Keep a one-page employee master with each person’s IP number, registration date, and UAN-seeding status. It saves hours when an audit or a claim query lands.”
