Tally vs Zoho Books: Which Accounting Software Is Better for Indian Businesses

Tally vs Zoho Books Which Accounting Software Is Better for Indian Businesses

It’s the 19th, close to 9 pm. GSTR-3B is due tomorrow, and you’re at a wedding in another city. Your accountant is at the office, and the only copy of the books is locked on one Tally PC. You need a single number. Nobody can send it. Both tools handle GST, so a feature list won’t save you. This fits the evaluation’s point that GSTR-3B filing is finished on the portal. The real Tally vs Zoho Books question is simpler: who needs the books, and from where?

TallyPrime fits stock-heavy, offline, single-office businesses. Zoho Books fits remote teams, recurring invoices, and bank feeds. For up to five users, Zoho usually costs less over three years.

This guide shows what each costs over three years, how each handles GST, and where each one struggles. You can then pick one and defend the choice to your CA.

Tally vs Zoho Books: Quick Verdict on Which Is Better

Pick TallyPrime if you run a trading, distribution, or manufacturing business with heavy stock, work from one location, have patchy internet, or have a CA who lives in Tally.

Pick Zoho Books if your team works from different places, you send recurring invoices, you want automatic bank feeds and payment reminders, or you want to start for free.

Here is the difference between Tally and Zoho Books at a glance:

“Before you compare anything, ask who will open the books late on the 19th, when GSTR-3B is due the next day. If it is one trained accountant in the office, Tally is hard to beat. If it is three people in two cities, I lean towards cloud. That answer matters more than any feature list.”

How We Compared Tally and Zoho Books?

This is a documentation-based comparison. We read each vendor’s own pages and help documents on 5 November 2026. We left out claims that only came from reseller blogs.

  • Versions: TallyPrime Release 7.2 and the Zoho Books India edition.
  • Prices: all exclude 18% GST. Zoho prices use yearly billing unless marked.
  • Add-ons: left out of totals unless named.
  • Three-year cost: licence or subscription plus renewals. No hardware and no staff time.
  • What we did not do: we did not time both tools in a lab. The 90-minute test further down lets you do that yourself, with your own data.

Tally vs Zoho Books: The Question That Decides Your Choice

Most Tally vs Zoho posts ask, “Which one has more features?” That is the wrong first question. Both file GST. Both do e-invoicing. Both do bank reconciliation.

Ask this instead: where does your accounting work happen, and who needs the numbers? Tally was built around one skilled operator at one desk. Zoho Books was built for many people who need access without sitting at that desk.

Four recent changes also push this decision:

  • E-invoicing: it applies once your turnover crosses ₹5 crore in any year since 2017-18. Taxpayers with turnover of ₹10 crore or more must report invoices to the IRP within 30 days. Check the e-invoice portal and Tally’s e-invoicing rules page for updates.
  • IMS: The Invoice Management System lets you accept, reject, or hold supplier invoices before you file. Both tools support it.
  • Audit trail: companies must keep an edit log in their accounting software. This has applied since 1 April 2023. Zoho explains its side on its audit trail page.
  • GST rates: the GST Council moved most goods to two main slabs, 5% and 18%, in September 2025. Zoho has a rate change explainer.

Here’s my view, after years in compliance work: most businesses don’t outgrow their software; they outgrow their process. A messy chart of accounts in a new cloud tool is still a messy chart of accounts. Clean the process first, then pick the tool.

Start here:

  1. Is your internet unreliable, or do you need to work offline? Go for TallyPrime.
  2. Do you need batches, many godowns, or manufacturing journals? Go for TallyPrime.
  3. Is your team in two or more places, or does the owner need numbers on the phone? Go for Zoho Books.
  4. Do you send recurring invoices or collect payments online? Go for Zoho Books.
  5. Mixed answers? Run the 90-minute test below.

TallyPrime vs Zoho Books: 3-Year Cost Comparison

Assumptions: yearly billing for Zoho, a lifetime Tally licence with TSS renewals from year two, no GST, no hardware, no staff time.

Business

TallyPrime (3 years)

Zoho Books (3 years)

1 user, small trader

Silver lifetime ₹22,500 + 2 renewals = ₹31,500

Standard = ₹26,964 (Free = ₹0)

5 users, one office

Gold lifetime ₹67,500 + 2 renewals = ₹94,500 (Gold yearly rental: ₹72,900)

Professional = ₹53,964

10 users, one office

₹94,500

Premium = ₹1,07,964

15 users, 3 branches

₹94,500, plus extras below

Elite = ₹1,79,964

The Tally branch figure is not like-for-like. TSS includes data sync between branches, but live shared access needs Cloud Access (a paid add-on) or your own server. Add backups and someone to manage it. Zoho’s price already includes hosting.

Cost verdict: up to about 5 users, Zoho is usually cheaper. Around 10 users in one office, the two come close. Beyond that, Tally looks cheaper on paper, but only if you can handle the extras yourself. Over five years, the 5-user office pays about ₹1,21,500 for Tally Gold and about ₹89,940 for Zoho Professional.

Tally vs Zoho Books

Tally vs Zoho Books for GST: GSTR-1, GSTR-3B and GSTR-2B Reconciliation

Take a real case. You are GST-registered, and you record 200 purchase invoices a month. Each month you match your books with GSTR-2B, chase mismatches, claim ITC, and file GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B.

In TallyPrime, with TSS active, you can download and reconcile GSTR-2A and 2B, and act on IMS. You can upload and file GSTR-1 inside Tally. Tally has the facility to download, reconcile and upload the data for GSTR-3B. But the filing is not done with just the upload. As Tally’s help page explains, you still prepare the return online on the GST portal and make the payment there.

In Zoho Books, you connect your GSTIN once, and taxable transactions are compiled automatically. You can set an approval step before anyone files. E-way bills are flagged when a sale needs one, and e-invoicing starts from the Standard plan. The Zoho GST page and GST documentation list the full flow.

Typical due dates for regular monthly filers. QRMP filers and extensions differ:

Before 3B

Match GSTR-2B, act on IMS

Reconcile and act in Tally

20th

GSTR-3B

Prepare from books, file online

A note on TDS and TCS management: This means Income Tax TDS and TCS, which are filed on the TRACES portal. Zoho Books tracks TDS, but expect to prepare and file the quarterly return on TRACES yourself. GST TDS is a different thing. It is filed in GSTR-7, and only notified deductors file it. Check how each tool handles it for your case.

“Reconcile GSTR-2B before you file GSTR-3B, every month, whichever tool you use. A mismatch you catch on the 15th costs you a phone call to the supplier. One you catch after filing can cost you input credit. Neither tool fixes a wrong GSTIN or a missing HSN code.”

Working With Your CA: Which Software Do Chartered Accountants Prefer?

This point gets ignored until audit time. Most Indian CAs know Tally well. Many also work in Zoho Books, and every plan lets you invite your accountant.

So ask your CA before you decide. Will they work inside Zoho Books? Do they need a Tally data file? Then run one month in parallel.

“The best test of any accounting software is simple. Can your CA reach the books without calling you first?”

Tally vs Zoho Books Features: Inventory, Cloud Access, Automation and Reporting

Starting a business is exciting — but the registration process? It can be overwhelming if you’re not prepared.

Did you know that over 30% of company registration applications in Bangalore get delayed due to incorrect or missing documentation?
According to data shared by professionals on CAclubIndia, founders often scramble last-minute to collect and verify their paperwork, costing them precious weeks in setup time.

In this blog, we break down the exact documents required for company registration in Bangalore, why each is needed, and how to prepare them correctly to ensure smooth and fast incorporation.

Whether you’re launching a Private Limited Company, LLP, or OPC, this guide will save you from delays, confusion, and potential rejection.

Hidden Costs of Switching Accounting Softwares

The licence is the small part. Plan for these:

  • A slower first month: Experienced Tally operators are fast. A new screen costs time.
  • Two systems for a month: You pay for both during the parallel run.
  • Your CA’s learning time: Expect questions in the first filing cycle.
  • Bank and tool connections: Feeds, payment gateways, and e-way bill logins need setting up again.
  • Old data: Previous years usually stay in Tally as a read-only archive.

Tally vs Zoho Books Free Trial: A 90-Minute Test on Your Own Data

Both are accounting software for Indian SMEs. Look at a specialised ERP if you need shop-floor production planning, many legal entities with inter-company consolidation, heavy project costing, or high-volume retail billing with barcode scanners. Use Tally or Zoho for your books, and add a dedicated system for the rest.

Tally vs Zoho Books Free Trial: A 90-Minute Test on Your Own Data

Tally offers a 7-day free trial and Zoho a 14-day trial. Use one real month of your own data and write down the minutes and the errors:

  1. Enter 20 sales and 20 purchase invoices, with GST.
  2. Import one bank statement and reconcile it.
  3. Reconcile a sample GSTR-2B against your purchases.
  4. Move stock between two godowns or locations.
  5. Invite your CA and check what they can see.
  6. Pull the profit and loss and the receivables ageing report.

The tool that wins on your data is the right one.

How to Migrate From Tally to Zoho Books: Step-by-Step Checklist

People look for a Tally alternative mostly for remote access, simultaneous users, bank automation, or integrations. Zoho offers migration assistance, but your data quality decides how smooth it goes.

Use this checklist:

  1. Back up your Tally data.
  2. Clean the chart of accounts and remove dead ledgers.
  3. Check customer and vendor balances, and GSTINs.
  4. Reconcile bank accounts.
  5. Verify stock quantities and valuation.
  6. Test sample invoices and bills.
  7. Match opening balances to the rupee, then get your CA’s sign-off.
  8. Run both systems for one month before you switch.

Plan the switch around 1 April, so the new system holds one clean year.

FAQs

Is Tally better than Zoho Books for small businesses?

It depends. A small trader with stock and weak internet does better on Tally. A small service business that bills online does better on Zoho Books.

Which is cheaper, Tally or Zoho?

Up to about 5 users, Zoho is usually cheaper over three years, and its Free plan costs nothing. For larger teams in one office, Tally can win. Compare the full cost, not just the licence.

Does Tally work without the internet?

Yes, for core accounting. Connected GST, e-invoicing, banking, and cloud access need a connection.

Can Zoho Books replace Tally completely?

For most service and small trading businesses, yes. For manufacturing or deep godown work, check your needs first.
